Damascus steel barrels, cylindrical, folding (the key under the forend), marked JOH SPRINGER ERBEN IN WIEN and No. 1 on the bar, bolt plates labelled NOWOTNY - IN WIEN, bolts and an iron set are decorated with ornaments and hunting motifs, on the protrusion of the bottom screw No. 1, 16 mm calibre (both barrels), length 114.5 cm (Do)
Johann Springer (1819-1875) came from Levoča, Slovakia and from 1840 he worked in Vienna with Matyáš Novotný, the gunman, whose sister he married in 1847. After Novotný died (1856) he acquired his business and was supplying his weapons to the leading members of the Habsburg aristocracy. After the death of Springer, the company that still exists in Vienna, commenced marking the arms of Joh. Springer's Erben (= heirs of Johann Springer).
